From Popular Mechanics, 100 Skills Every Man Should Know

As usual, way too many people got worked up about how this article relates to men’s and women’s roles. But, I did have to laugh at one of the comments,

So how many of these can each of the presidential and VP candidates do? I think in this case, the best man is a woman! Probably by a long shot.

Okay, now I’m off to start working on new skills.

Faith & International Affairs

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Good Article in The Washington Post:

The majority of Georgetown students I know are fairly knowledgeable about religion. They can talk intelligently about Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism. The glitch is that they talk from the perspective of anthropologists and sociologists and historians. These are valuable perspectives. But they are not enough. Of course we need to raise young people who can be smart, savvy, sophisticated participants in international affairs. What we also need are young people who can be all of those things while at the same time knowing and understanding what it is to live one’s life with a commitment rooted in faith.

Bush in Ukraine

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Our president was in Ukraine this week to support Ukraine’s bid for NATO. I can only imagine that the amount of ‘HET HATO’ graffiti in DP increased dramatically since I left.

Bush also spent some time hanging out with the prettiest politician in Ukraine, Буш предложил Тимошенко уединиться

One of the comments below the article states:

Русский человек, Родина тебя зовёт! Пришло время тебе и твоей семье возвращаться на свою благословенную историческую Родину – Российскую Федерацию. Ты нужен России! Возвращайся скорей!

Which translates to something like: “Russian people, the motherland is calling to you. It’s time for you and your family to return to your blessed historic motherland - the Russian Federation. You need Russia! Return soon!”

Ah, sometimes I miss Eastern Ukraine/ Russia

Moscow Rules

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

I discovered these today. They would have been useful in Ukraine. I have decided I will now live my life based on the following guiding principles.

  1. Assume nothing.
  2. Never go against your gut.
  3. Everyone is potentially under opposition control.
  4. Don’t look back; you are never completely alone.
  5. Go with the flow, blend in.
  6. Vary your pattern and stay within your cover.
  7. Lull them into a sense of complacency.
  8. Don’t harass the opposition.
  9. Pick the time and place for action.
  10. Keep your options open.
